Here is another sweet story! In 1996 the head of Delacy’s label Easy Street liked my remix of Delacy’s “Hideaway” for DMC. He asked if I would try my luck at the new song “That Look” . He sent me the Vocal parts only. I was not sure what key the song was on or even how the original song sounded . I worked with what i had for 3 weeks. I made a demo mix of it on cassette and took it with me to Winter Music Confrence 96′ . On the way to the airport i remember playing it on my Sony Walkmen (hmmmm) to my friend Michael McDavid . Aside from his positive reaction, he kept repeating the hook line the rest of the way. I also played it to Sharam and Ali of Deep Dish who were actually responsible for Delacy’s hit “Hideaway” . Upon first seconds of listening they both raised the eye brows followed with a big smile. I Knew right then it was going to be a smash. Several weeks went by and no response from Easy Street. I did not get paid up front or even agree on a fee for this remix.
I past a DAT copy to Junior Vaasques at the Tunnel . Then Johnny Vicious did his own edit with Tom Molton . In few weeks the buzz was very loud in New York city. Thank You ! By now i have been in this game few years so, I knew it was just a matter of time until i start hearing about interested Labels.
Few more weeks go by then, one morning my Attorney Kurosh Nassery at the time informed me that several european labels including DeConstruction in UK are interested Now. Apparently they had previously turned down the original version which till today i never heard. After some negotiations, Due to the fact that my remix ignited this interest from labels, Easy Street offered me a producer point on this song with a nice fee in the end.
I have not heard back from Easy Street since then. Even when contacted for my Royalties. Its All good.
